Parents, allow me to share my favorite hacks and products to ease some stress on your upcoming travel with an infant/toddler.

Three years ago, my husband and I moved across the country from all friends and family and committed to traveling back to visit at least once if not twice a year. In 2024, I gave birth to our baby girl where travel is not as easy as it was when it was just us. Not only did we need to fly home, we also had to spend hours in the car traveling to different family. I scrounged the internet trying to find the best products and tricks to keep my daughter occupied. I had the worst anxiety of her crying the entire flight and disrupting everyone around us.

We traveled back when my daughter was 4 months, 15 months, and most recently 19 months. Here are my tricks and favorites.

  1. If you can swing it, try and book your flights around nap time. Thankfully our flight was non-stop and was only 2.5 hours long. At all of the ages we flew back, I tried my hardest and sometimes paid a little more for an optimal time of when she could fall asleep for an extended amount of time.

  2. Bring snacks! TSA won't allow you to bring liquids through security, but you can bring any other food or buy liquids after you are through security. This will keep your little one occupied and not hangry.

  3. With snacks comes messes. What helped keep the snacks in our seats and not on the floor (or thrown on other passengers) is the tray table cover. It served dual purpose to keep her toys in check too!

  4. My all time favorite toy that kept my daughter occupied the most both on the plane and in the car is a busy book. This is the best investment I ever made. From the buckles to zippers to Velcro pieces, she has a ball!

  5. Other products that helped traveling easier was the car seat bag we bought. Even better, they allow you to put diapers in the bag in the car seat, saving room in your checked bag or carry on.
